![]() ![]() Cable ends come in two styles, ball socket style that pop on-off or pin style that slide on-off and secure with clip. You can get this from either a TDI, 1.8T, 2.0L, or VR6, they all are the same as long as they are 5 speed. Shift Box, cables, cable ends and cable bracket from a 2000-2005 5-Speed equipped VW MK4 body style.I also recommend using a digital camera to take pictures before and during disassembly for your reference. I highly recommend an A4 Bentley repair manual, as well as 1/4 + 3/8” drive ratchets, extensions and swivels, 8-17mm shallow and deep well sockets, Torx bits, Phillips head screw driver, assortment of pry bars, telescoping magnet, spring clamp pliers, diagonal cutters, 3/8” torque wrench, synthetic grease and G070 OE synthetic gear oil. *Make sure you have all of your parts before starting this job, otherwise you’ll have to put it all back together or wait for 2 weeks for a special part like I did! Total parts cost was around $200 including the Dieselgeek TTX shifter. Time to complete this job : Around 5-8 hours depending on skill level and work space available. I recommend looking through VWVortex or your local VW salvage yard.) (Please note that Dieselgeek sells new short shifters but does not sell used parts. Special thanks to TDIClub members jcrews, turbocharged798, as well as Jim from Dieselgeek for their help throughout the project. Also be wary from whom you purchase the parts from. ![]() My pre-2000 shifter and linkage was fully functional, but after replacing the black plastic carrier piece after it broke the first time, I researched and found that there were better options out there! Parts are easy to find, you just need to be careful about what you look for. The shift box inside the car is also different between pre-20 and later MK4, as shown in THIS picture. Clearly put, if you have THIS style transmission linkage, you have the old version. This was corrected in the MY2000 and newer linkages. The old linkage works OK when all of the parts are new, but it’s still somewhat sloppy and has plastic parts that are prone to degradation and breakage. When the MK4 Jetta, Golf and New Beetle were initially released, they used shift linkage mostly akin to the previous MK3 generation. will be a big plus. This HOW-TO explains how to exchange your 5-speed shift linkage from a 98 or 99 New Beetle or 99.5 Golf or Jetta to that of a 2000-2005 MK4 vehicle. Plus being able to use all your old equipment from LSD to clutch, axles, mounts, starter, etc. It will be significantly less than a 6-speed conversion. That said that price might be + - ~$100 as we ramp up. We're shooting for $1498 for the entire kit. But we're looking at for a 6th gear conversion kit (which also includes a highly modified stock 5th gear (need your working old one back), detailed instructions, everything in the box except a mechanic. Ī) We're not 100% sure on final cost right now. And yes, all 02J transmissions will work, including Beetle. Q) Will it bolt on with the trans in the car? How easy will it be to undo and remove if/when I sell my car? Will it fit in a Beetle?Ī) No it will not - if you want to put it back to a 5-speed that can be done without dropping the transmission. That said it won't make it any weaker either. Q) So is there a south bend clutch avable (sic) for these? I'm looking for a newer trans and clutch for my car and just was wondering.Ī) This kit will not make your existing 5-speed any stronger. All we are doing is changing the end housing.Ī) This kit will work with all 02J or 02A transmissions. Any part you have bought for an existing 5-speed will work with this kit. Q) Will this work with my 3.16 RG and current Limited Slip?Ī) Yes. I've been extremely busy preparing for TDIfest, consequently I don't live on the forums anymore, but still am around as much as possible. Alternatively the last couple seconds of this clip should sum it all up nicely. Just look at some of the cool stuff we have and that should answer your question. Meanwhile, here is a pic of our first working unit.Ī) Obviously you don't know me too well. We will update this thread with information as it becomes available. This is not limited to the TDI either, this kit will also work for the gassers. The plan is to start with the 02J, but as interest grows for other kits we will expand. We will have options for taller ring and pinions, and probably eventually we'll have a custom R&P that can be installed. There will be different price levels depending on what you want to do. Everything needed to do the swap will be included in this kit. You will therefore retain your original clutch, starter, axles, mounts, shift box/linkage, etc. This is a complete bolt on kit to turn your 02J 5-speed transmission into a 6-speed. Finally, lot of things, we are ready to post this up. Well folks, this kit has been a work in progress since 2005. ![]()
